Carrier landing in high seas is a complicated task: deck oscillation amplitude could be up to several meters and a single inaccurate pilot reaction could lead to an aircraft crash. It is necessary to create training programs that take into account complex wave-vessel interaction in real-time using a hydrodynamic approach.
We simulate and render irregular sea waves and the vessel motion they induce in real-time. To simulate sea waves we use FFT. Hydrodynamic and hydrostatic forces are integrated directly using the random sampling points on the submerged vessel surface. This approach takes into account real hull shape, vessel payload and propulsion system with six DOF in real-time with acceptable accuracy.
This video illustrates the above-mentioned approach in training system for carrier landing. Note that for simplicity’s sake, the aircraft simulated as thin-airfoil.
